2006 Final New York State Sportswriter’s Association Poll
West Islip lax wins Class A June 11, 2006

Scott Craig never flinched as the bucket of ice water was being poured over his head.
The West Islip boys lacrosse coach said he had no idea senior midfielder Peter Mezzanotte was standing right behind him, but it sure appeared the grinning Craig was waiting to be doused at the conclusion of yesterday’s state Class A final at Stony Brook University.
Justin Turri had two goals, Brian Caufield a goal and two assists and Mezzanotte won nine of 15 faceoffs as West Islip beat four-time defending state champion, Section III’s West Genesee, 7-6, for its first state title.
“I don’t know if it makes it sweeter, but you want to beat the best and they’re the best,” Craig said of West Genesee, which beat West Islip, 12-6, in the 2004 state final. “So I guess in that respect, if you’re going to win the state championship, it’s nice to win it against them.”
From 2001 to 2003, Craig’s teams were on the verge of winning Suffolk crowns but lost hard-fought title games. And then, after winning Long Island titles each of the next two years, WI twice was overmatched in the state Final Four.
Not this time, as Steve Cochrane scored off a Caufield assist to give West Islip a 7-4 lead with 6:23 left. West Genesee’s Collin Donahue and Tim Desko scored in a 37-second span to make it 7-6 with 1:25 left, and the Wildcats (19-5) won the ensuing faceoff, but a critical offsides violation with 1:05 left returned possession to West Islip (23-0) for good.
“That’s what’s been bugging us all year, just making those little miscues,” said 31st-year WG coach Mike Messere, whose teams have won a state-record 14 NYSPHSAA titles.
West Islip, on the other hand, won largely because it protected the ball. After committing 29 turnovers in its 8-7 overtime win over Massapequa in the L.I. final, WI coughed up the ball a playoff-low 13 times against WG.
Sal Barcia’s face was filled with relief during the postgame celebration. As his teammates mobbed each other, the Lions’ steady, stocky goalie slowly walked toward them, barely saying a word.
“I was just happy it’s over,” said Barcia, who made eight saves. “This is the only way I would want to go out, playing West Genny. You win states against anyone else, it would be nice, but not as good as this.”

Huntington streaks to title
BY TOM ROCK
Newsday Staff Writer
June 11, 2006
It was only two weeks ago that someone noticed Huntington’s name was missing from the trophy presented to the state Class B boys lacrosse champion each year. For 50 weeks, the award sat in a glass case and then a rush order had to be placed for an emergency engraving before the award was passed on to the next recipient.
With its 2005 accomplishment finally etched in history, the Blue Devils went about carving their finishing swath of the undefeated 2006 campaign. Huntington walloped Corning East (Section IV), 18-6, in yesterday’s state final at Stony Brook University, extending its winning streak to 43 games and completing a sweep of the sport’s state titles by Long Island schools for the first time since 2000.
After the game, the trophy Huntington hurried to prep was returned directly to the Blue Devils. Had they waited two weeks, they might have gotten a two-for-one deal from the engraver.
Then again, the superstitious Blue Devils never stray far from a successful pattern.
“We might have to do it the same way next year, two weeks before the championship,” Huntington coach Paul McDermott said. “We try to do everything the same.”
For the last two seasons, all of Huntington’s results have been the same. Wins. The two differences in this one were the ecstatic celebration at the end and the hints of weakness showed by the Blue Devils in the first quarter. Huntington (22-0) trailed 3-1 late in the opening period and the blowout many expected was slow to materialize.
Corning East (18-3) played keep-away, grinding the ball for long possessions while the game clock worked against the high-powered Huntington offense. But with 2.8 seconds left in the quarter, Zachary Howell scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-2 and it was clear then, even facing a one-goal deficit, Huntington had recaptured its poise.
“It was pretty frustrating, but I knew if we got a couple of goals in we’d get the momentum,” senior attack Austin Carino said.
Howell’s goal was, in fact, the first of seven straight during which the Blue Devils exhibited the speed, precision and dominance it used all season. Midfielder Rhamel Bratton took the ball the length of the field, circled around the cage, and scored on a cut-back dodge with 1:58 left in the half, making it look as effortless as a ride on a porch swing. Less than a minute later, his brother Shamel Bratton took a short pass from goalie Sean Brady (seven saves) and cruised the length of the field as well, this time at least taking time to deke a few defenders before making the score 8-3.
In the third quarter, Huntington scored the first four goals in five minutes and took 13 shots before Corning East had an attempt.
Carino finished with five goals and Howell had three goals and three assists. Shamel Bratton had two goals and five assists for the Blue Devils.
As the team posed for pictures with its hardware after the game, many players held up four fingers on one hand and three on the other, signifying the winning streak. Some players, such as Carino, ended their varsity careers without a loss. But for many others, there’s still number 44 to look forward to.
After all, there’s still plenty of space on the trophy and plenty of time before this year’s season is immortalized.
